South Africa: A Journey 16 Years in the Making

South Africa had been calling for 16 years—and it exceeded every expectation. From unforgettable safari moments near Hoedspruit to the energy of Cape Town.

South Africa has been at the top of my travel wish list since 2008. Many of you know that I competed for Canada in sailing at the Beijing Olympics, where our training partners were the South African women’s team — the first women to represent South Africa after the country was allowed back into the Olympic Games following the end of Apartheid. Ever since then, I’ve felt a strong pull toward this remarkable country. So, when the opportunity came to join a travel industry FAM trip with 5 Continents, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. 5 Continents are one of our premium and most trusted travel partners who provide exceptional service to the travel trade.

And South Africa? It exceeded every expectation.

On Safari in Hoedspruit

Our journey began with a three-day safari in the Shiduli safari Lodge on the Karongwe Game Reserve near Hoedspruit — and what an introduction it was. We were lucky enough to see not only the famous “Big Five,” but so much more. Watching giraffes, cheetahs, elephants, and the elegant kudu move with effortless precision and seeing them display their immense power was truly unforgettable. Yes – we saw Pumbaa, Simba, Zazu, Mufasa, Nala and Scar too!

The experience was elevated by our guides and trackers, whose deep knowledge, respect for the wildlife, and sharp eyes brought every moment to life. They allowed us to experience these magnificent animals in their natural habitat in a way that was both thrilling and deeply respectful.

We also toured the various lodges on the reserve — from cozy bungalows and luxury suites to beautifully designed safari tents — each offering a different way to experience the bush, all with wildlife just (safely!) outside your door. And the food? Incredible. We even tried impala stew, which was surprisingly delicious and absolutely unforgettable.

The Energy of Cape Town

From the bush, we headed to Cape Town — a city that instantly stole my heart. I was struck by how active and vibrant the city is: people running, cycling, swimming, and enjoying the outdoors everywhere you look. With iconic Table Mountain towering above the coastline, the setting is nothing short of spectacular.

We had the opportunity to explore some of the city’s finest hotels and resorts, including the One&Only Cape Town, a stunning property with its own private lagoon and waterways.

We stayed at the President Hotel, which offers a fantastic central location and a great pool — perfect for families.

One of the most moving moments of the trip came after our visit to the Cape of Good Hope. That evening, our hosts arranged a private dinner with Christo Brand, one of Nelson Mandela’s former prison guards who later became a close friend of Mandela’s and the head of the Robben Island Tourist Attraction. Listening to him share stories and receiving a signed copy of his book, Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend, was a deeply powerful and humbling experience.

Wine Country Magic in Stellenbosch

Our final stop was Stellenbosch, and if there is such a thing as a perfect ending to a trip, this was it. Rolling vineyards, charming streets, warm sunshine, world-class food and wine — it truly felt like paradise.

We enjoyed a picnic at the Boschendal Wine Estate that was anything but ordinary. Instead of baskets, our lunch arrived in wooden wine crates filled with local cheeses, cured meats, fresh-baked focaccia, and of course, a glass of Boschendal’s own Sauvignon Blanc. Sitting among the vines, soaking up the scenery, it was pure magic.
