Country Entry Requirements

Before embarking on international travel, it is crucial to check the entry requirements for your destination country. Each country has its own regulations regarding visas, passports, vaccinations, and other documentation, which can vary based on nationality, purpose of visit, and length of stay. Failing to meet these requirements can result in denied entry, financial losses, and unnecessary stress. Staying informed and prepared ensures a smooth travel experience, helps avoid unexpected complications, and allows you to focus on enjoying your trip with peace of mind.

Updated News

As of January 8, 2025, Canadians, and residents of many other countries must preregister for entry authorization before arriving in the UK, and soon for the rest of Europe too. While this might sound like a hassle, it’s quite straightforward. Just submit an online application, pay a small fee, and you’re good to go!

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is now required for visitors from Canada, including those just transiting through a UK airport. Europe will follow suit with the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) later in 2025.

Europe

Europe’s New Visa-Waiver Programs: ETA and ETIAS Explained by your Travel Professionals @ Gravitate

Travelers heading to Europe will need to apply online for entry authorization before arrival. But don’t worry, the process is quick and easy, taking just a few minutes and a small fee.

What is ETA and ETIAS? & How do ETA and ETIAS work?

Both the UK’s ETA and Europe’s ETIAS are designed to enhance border security for travelers who don’t need a visa. This includes passport holders from Canada.

To enter the UK, even for a layover, you need to apply online and pay a £10 fee. For Europe, the ETIAS fee will be €7. Applications are required for every traveler, regardless of age. The UK charges a fee for each ETA applicant, but ETIAS fees are waived for those under 18 or over 70.

Once approved, your authorization is electronically linked to your passport. Most applications are processed quickly—many within minutes, most within a day, and nearly all within three business days. However, it’s wise to apply at least a month in advance in case of any delays.

When does ETA go into effect? & When does ETIAS go into effect?

Travelers from the US, Canada, and most other non-European countries now need an ETA to enter the UK. EU passport holders won’t need an ETA until April 2, 2025. For more information and to apply, visit the UK government’s ETA page HERE or use the UK ETA app.

The EU plans to launch ETIAS later in 2025. Travelers will have plenty of time to apply before the requirement kicks in. A grace period is expected to follow the launch, during which authorities may waive the requirement for unaware travelers. Check the EU’s official ETIAS page for updates.

Which countries require ETA registration? & which countries will require ETIAS registration?

An ETA is required for entry into the UK, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You’ll need an ETA to enter any UK airport from outside the UK, even for flight connections.

ETIAS will be required throughout most of Europe, including Iceland and Cyprus, but not the Republic of Ireland, the UK (which requires an ETA), or some eastern European countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, or Serbia. You don’t need ETIAS for layovers if you stay within the airport’s security area.

How long do ETA and ETIAS approvals last?

An ETA allows multiple entries into the UK over two years or until your passport expires, for stays up to six months. ETIAS is valid for three years on the same passport, with a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen area.

Why do ETA and ETIAS exist?

The UK and ETIAS member nations aim to improve border security and speed up passport checks. These programs are similar to those in Australia, New Zealand, and the US, which has required visa-exempt visitors to register since 2009.

How will this affect European travel in 2025?

Fortunately, ETA and ETIAS are simple formalities, much easier than getting or renewing a passport. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of the game! Airlines will likely inform passengers about these requirements and may require authorization at check-in.

Each European country is also setting up its own automated entry/exit system. You might see kiosks for scanning passports and biometric data at entry points, though human border officials will still be present for a while. Over time, long lines for passport control may become a thing of the past.
